I Write for Kids
May 5, 2022

I write for your kiddos.

As a child, I went through the motions of visiting my father every other weekend. Even though my father loved me and my brother, the bling fell flat and lacked meaning. I wasn’t sure why.

Life at home remained stable but colorless. When I was nine, my stepdad, Mel, separated from my mom. We went to our knees in prayer.

We had rarely talked about God before, but suddenly Jesus became the most joyful and energizing force I’d ever known.

Six months later, my mom and Mel-Dad renewed their wedding vows. Mom, Mel-Dad, my brother, and I were baptized. Our spiritual journey began simultaneously. Mel used to lead a band in a nightclub. But after his conversion, that gift turned to worship songs in our home.

The lights went on, and the dreary colors of my nine-year-old world turned vibrant.

Part of my transformation came in the form of story. I listened to Christian allegories read aloud on the radio station each Saturday morning.

In one story, the dragon represented temptation, and a princess sought to hide her new found love—a bona fide dragon pup. Her father banned all dragons from their kingdom to protect her, but she had to learn the hard way.

In another story, a forgotten blackberry longed to be in a pie or to become dark purple jam. Yet the blackberry surrendered its deepest hopes to its Creator. After a snowy winter and warm spring, the lonesome blackberry became king of the next year’s crop. Not forgotten. Dearly loved. And oh, the fruit and joy that followed.

These stories gripped me. Pulled me in. Washed over my soul with truth and left me hungry for more of God.

I write to expose the darkness behind the evils of this world and to make the solid hope of Christ real for children. I want to shine Christ’s light on their world so they can appreciate the vivid colors of our Creator and His creation. I want them to know how much He loves them and how much He cares about every detail in their life, because this is what transformed me.

Jesus is the Hero of my story then and now. Twenty years later, the Lord transformed my birth father—the man I grew up visiting every other weekend. After a major life event in his mid-fifties, he came to love Jesus with all his heart. He now lives in our home, helps me homeschool the little ones, and tells me jokes while doing my dishes.
